Why single photos instead of continuous video — and how do they become a film?
Anyone hearing about timelapse for the first time tends to ask the same questions. Here's the plain-language version:
Why single frames instead of continuous video?
A build can run for 6 months, a year, or longer. Record all of that as continuous video and you'd have terabytes of footage within days, more than any camera or storage system is built for. And for hours at a stretch, nothing visibly changes anyway; the real change happens across days and weeks. So the camera takes just one frame at set intervals, a few times a day, say. That keeps the file sizes sane and captures only the moments that actually matter.
How do hundreds of photos become one video?
A video is really just 24 to 30 still frames a second, shown one after another — not unlike flipping through a stack of drawings. We take the frames collected over months and line them up at normal playback speed. About 720 photos, shot four times a day over six months, played back at 24 frames per second: that's a six-month build compressed into a 30-second video.
